Shannon Walker

Shannon Walker

Leveraging her three decades of experience across professional dog training, entrepreneurship, and advocacy, Shannon Walker steps into her role as Executive Director equipped with an exceptional skill set and a visionary approach. Shannon’s contributions to the service dog industry have been transformative. From her impactful work as the founder of Northwest Battle Buddies to her proactive role within our Association, Shannon has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to our mission. She understands that service dogs are more than companions for Veterans; they are crucial partners in restoring their freedom, dignity, and independence. Widely respected as an industry thought leader, Shannon has tirelessly worked to bring national awareness to service dogs‘ vital role in assisting veterans and their challenges. From her impactful TEDx Talk, PTSD and Service Dogs: Beneath the Surface , to her regular appearances on FOX News Radio, Shannon’s efforts have played a significant role in shaping public perception and understanding of PTSD, service dogs, and veterans.

Brett Simon

Director of Standards & Membership

Brett Simon

Brett Simon is a founder of K9s For Warriors. He currently serves as the Director of Standards and Membership for the Association of Service Dog Providers to Military Veterans. Brett oversees more than 10 organizations throughout the country and created the standards for membership and dog training curriculum utilized by these programs. In his former career, he worked as a police officer for nearly 15 years (10 of which were spent as a K9 handler). Following his law enforcement career, Brett became a private investigator. Although he was challenged by this endeavor, he found himself wanting to go back to his true calling: working with dogs. In 2005, Brett was selected for a new program implemented by the military that cross trained tracking and explosive dogs. During his tour in Mosul, Iraq, he was attached to the US Army 2nd Infantry Division as a DOD contractor. Brett and his dog Hugo were very successful on their missions, discovering multiple inventories of weapons and explosives. After returning home in 2005, Brett was diagnosed with PTSD. He completed a second trip to Iraq, teaming up with an explosives dog. Upon his return, he and his mother, Shari Duval, began developing the plan to establish K9s for Warriors to assist post - 9/11 veterans diagnosed with PTSD, TBI, and/or MST. He is a dog training/handling thought leader and public speaker. Brett has appeared on local and national programming, including HLN and Fox News. He has also been featured in stories and articles around the country – one being People Magazine. Brett is a member of Leadership Jacksonville’s Class of 2018. In his free time, he enjoys hitting the golf course with his family and going on fun outings with his wife and son.

Amanda Baity

Wife of a Marine Corps combat veteran, Amanda co-founded Semper K9 Assistance Dogs in 2014 with her husband Christopher. She is currently Director of Operations for Semper K9 and an advocate for the military community with a focus on invisible wounds. In her early work career, she was Controller for a multi-million dollar corporation in Atlanta as she attended college. While finishing her degrees in Optometry and Astro-Biology she worked as a family service worker for the Department of Health & Human Services Head Start Program.

Craig H. Metz

Mr. Metz is a Partner in the Washington, DC Office of Nelson Mullins Riley and Scarborough LLP, an AM LAW 100 Firm. He has more than 30 years of experience in Federal Legislative and Regulatory Affairs, with a background in Defense, Healthcare, and Information Technology. Mr. Metz served as the Chief of Staff to the Late Congressman Floyd Spence (R-SC), who was a Member of both the Armed Services Committee and the Veterans’ Affairs Committee over his thirty years of service in the Congress. During the six-year Chairmanship of the Armed Services Committee by Congressman Spence, Mr. Metz was also a Legislative Coordinator for the Chairman, as a member of the Professional Staff of the Committee. Mr. Metz has served as a Counsel to the United States Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee (now the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee), and he has been appointed to positions in the Executive Branch of the Federal Government, including, serving in the Senior Executive Service. He was also an Assistant Director of the Congressional Affairs Division of the American Medical Association (AMA). Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Metz represented the Federal Government Relations interests of the EMC Corporation, which was acquired by Dell in 2016, and is now Dell EMC. Mr. Metz is a member of the Bars of South Carolina and the District of Columbia. He is the recipient of the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian honor of the State of South Carolina, and a number of other recognitions from the South Carolina Military Department, as well as the Legislative Award of the Reserve Officers Association of the United States (ROA).

Jeremiah Blocker

Jeremiah Blocker

Jeremiah was a former State prosecutor and Drug Court Liaison for the State of Florida. He is partner in a small law firm practicing Business and Land Use law with a focus on assisting Military Veterans. Jeremiah is a former board member of the Florida Bar Committee on Military Law and is certified in Veteran Benefits Appeals. Jeremiah is a graduate of the University of Florida, where he obtained a degree in history. While attending college, he participated in the Army ROTC program, commissioning as a Second Lieutenant upon graduation. In the military, Jeremiah served as an Army officer for over 13 years, both on active duty and in the reserves. A veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Jeremiah commanded a Military Police company in combat operations in Northern Iraq. Jeremiah continues his military service in the Air Force Reserves as a Judge Advocate General officer with the rank of Major. Awards Jeremiah has received include: Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal and the Combat Action Badge. Jeremiah graduated from Florida Coastal School of Law. He has also earned graduate degrees in Military History from Norwich University, Land Use & Development from the University of Miami and Business Entrepreneurship from the University of Florida. Jeremiah was recently elected to the St. Johns County, Florida, Board of Commissioners as the County Commissioner for District Four and is serving a four-year term in elected office. He is an active member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Military Officers Association of America and the Military Order of Foreign Wars. Jeremiah and his wife Lauren live in Florida with their two young children.

Jordan Kaye Colvin

Jordan Kaye Colvin

A powerful government/public affairs expert recognized for her exceptional ability to develop breakthrough strategies and bipartisan solutions and consensus. Jordan has built a decade’s-long reputation in Washington, D.C. with her deep understanding of politics and policy and her ability to advance legislative agendas on both sides of the aisle. She is the rare professional who prepares clients with discipline and insight – establishing meaningful relationships with legislators, their staff, executive branch agencies and private sector stakeholders. Jordan began working with private sector clients after serving as Legislative Director for Democratic Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) where she led the Congressman's robust portfolio of bipartisan work on the House Financial Services and Homeland Security Committees, and Chairmanship of the bipartisan House Problem Solvers Caucus. During her tenure Congressman Gottheimer introduced the bipartisan and bicameral “Invest to Protect Act” (H.R. 6648) which passed in both Chambers. Jordan has also served as the Legislative Director for a Republican member of Congress and as a Policy Advisor and Investigator for the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs. She also served on the U.S House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security as a law clerk. Jordan's previous professional roles include working with both private sector clients and professional trade associations to develop effective government and stakeholder engagement strategies. In 2018, Jordan served as the campaign manager for a political campaign that won the Democratic nomination in Maryland’s 1st Congressional district (setting records for voter turnout and fundraising). She has also served as a chief of development for a veteran’s service organization, and vice president of public affairs for a political advocacy organization. Early in her career Jordan worked as a police officer – FBI Task Force on Human Trafficking at the Washington Metropolitan Police Department. In 2020 Jordan worked on the Biden for President Campaign as the Veterans and Military Families for Biden Event Coordinator. Jordan is the founder and current board member of the Association of Service Dog Providers for Military Veterans (ASDPMV), a nonprofit whose mission is to advocate on behalf of veteran service organizations that help military veterans heal from trauma by pairing them with psychiatric service dogs. In 2021, President Biden signed into law the PAWS Act, legislation that Jordan developed on the Hill and the impetus for launching the ASDPMV. Jordan holds a Juris Doctorate from the David A. Clarke School of Law at the University of the District of Columbia and a Bachelor of Arts from The George Washington University.

Tom Tackett

Tom Tackett

Tom Tackett is a behaviorist and competition dog trainer based in CA since 1977. As a recognized authority on obedience and protection training, Tom has appeared as an expert witness in court cases and on numerous local television programs. Competitive in Schutzhund Trials, he won the first all Rottweiler National Schutzhund III Trial in Florida in 1985 with a perfect score (100) points in protection. While in Germany acquiring “Arras Zur Spielmans-Au”, the 1985 European Champion & World Champion Rottweiler, Tom was certified as a Schuzhund Trial Decoy by the German Rottweiler Club (ADRK). He was president of the Southern Counties Rottweiler Club from 1992-1995. With an emphasis on continued education, he has sponsored numerous Police seminars. Additionally, he has composed nationally distributed audio tapes on dog behavior for veterinarians; written articles for the Orange County Register entitled, ”Dogged Dilemmas” from 1992-95. California & Orange County Rehabilitation Programs recognized Tom’s school for Trainers from 1988-96. In August of 2006, Tom and his Black Lab, “Kona” were certified as a “Certified Mold Detection Team” at Vom KaiserhofeTraining Center” in Lawrence, Ks., as well as with the “World Detector Dog Organization” based in Vincent, AL. In December 2009, Tom & “Hark Vom Schwarzen-Eis” completed the “BH” title. That is the obedience & traffic sure title pre-requisite for Schutzhund. Tom is also a CGC evaluator for AKC, a Professional Premium member of APDT, and a Professional member of IACP. and certified evaluator for the Foundation for Service Dog Support, Inc. Lani Rethaber

Lani Rethaber - CPDT-KA - Executive Director
Lani serves as the Executive Director of Patriot K9s, a role he has held since 2021. His journey with the organization began as a volunteer, working alongside a dedicated team while managing operations at a local trucking company. Lani’s exceptional leadership and passion for service quickly propelled him into the Executive Director position, where he continues to champion the organization’s mission of providing service dogs to disabled veterans. A proud United States Marine and former member of the Wisconsin Army National Guard, enlisting at the age of 17. Although too young to fulfill his dream of becoming a K9 handler, Lani’s determination led him to train as a Motor Transport Maintenance third and fourth echelon mechanic. His expertise in working on tactical vehicles took him to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and Naval Air Station Dallas, Texas. A tireless overachiever, Lani expanded his service by becoming a Safety NCO and Inspector Instructor Staff. After completing his military service, Lani transitioned to the transportation industry in Wisconsin, where he built a diverse career spanning mechanic, driver, dispatcher, and operations manager. His versatile experience in the field has further honed his leadership and problem-solving abilities. Lani has been a lifelong dog enthusiast, with a rich history of owning, training, and caring for a variety of breeds, including Dobermans, German Wirehaired Pointers, Huskies, three wolf hybrids, and Beagles. However, his true passion lies with the German Shepherd Dog—he currently owns four titled dogs in the sport of Schutzhund. As an active member of the O.G. Inselstadt Schutzhund Club, Lani also serves as Vice President, where he contributes to the development and promotion of canine sport and training excellence. As a dedicated father to three daughters, Lani is proud that his legacy of service continues through his family. One of his daughters followed in his footsteps by serving in the United States Marine Corps, and his two younger daughters have also enlisted, carrying forward the proud tradition of Marine Corps service in their family. Lani’s vast experience in both military and civilian sectors, his passion for K9 training, and his unwavering dedication to serving others make him a respected leader in the community. Executive Director of Canine Development and Veteran Training Operations jarod@northwestbattlebuddies.org Jarod Walker stands as a distinguished leader in canine training, celebrated for his unwavering dedication to enhancing canine performance and the lives of their handlers, particularly U.S. Veterans. In his role as Executive Director of Canine Development and Veteran Training Operations for Northwest Battle Buddies (NWBB)1, Jarod is integral to the organization’s mission of empowering Veterans through professionally trained service dogs. Jarod's journey into canine training began with a deep-rooted passion for dogs from a young age. Growing up in an environment surrounded by dogs, he developed an intrinsic understanding of their behavior and training needs. This early interest and innate understanding propelled him into a career focused on canine development and training, where he has achieved numerous prestigious credentials. His career is a testament to his dedication and expertise in the field of canine training. At NWBB, Jarod oversees the training of service dogs for Veterans with PTSD. His responsibilities encompass developing comprehensive training programs, managing operations, and ensuring that both dogs and Veterans receive the highest standards of care and training. Jarod's work is crucial in helping Veterans regain their independence and improve their quality of life through the support of a service dog. In 2018, Jarod founded Next Generation K9 2, his flagship enterprise, where he serves as the owner and master trainer. The business specializes in advanced training programs, including a full spectrum of service, detection, and protection dogs. Under his leadership, Next Generation K9 has established itself as a leader in the field, known for its innovative and effective training techniques. Additionally, Jarod is the co-owner of Man's Best Friend 3, a renowned dog training and boarding facility. In this role, he has been instrumental in expanding the services and enhancing the reputation of the facility across the Pacific Northwest. His contributions have helped Man's Best Friend become a trusted name in canine training, known for its exceptional training programs and commitment to excellence. Jarod’s role at NWBB exemplifies his commitment to serving Veterans. By leveraging his extensive training expertise and military experience, he ensures that Veterans receive the highest quality service dogs, thereby enhancing their independence and quality of life. Jarod served with distinction as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from September 2014 to September 2018. He was the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the 4th squad of S6 with the 5th Marines, a critical leadership role within the communications and information systems division. During his service, Jarod was stationed at Camp Hansen in Okinawa, Japan, and was @Legacy Consulting Here's the second part: deployed to South Korea and the Philippines. His exemplary performance earned him the Navy Achievement Medal for creating and implementing the network infrastructure of a major training exercise involving five different Marine Corps units and over 2,100 participants. Jarod’s dedication to his profession is matched by his commitment to his family and community. He actively participates in training programs that benefit local law enforcement and community organizations, ensuring his expertise has a broad and positive impact. Jarod’s personal life is deeply intertwined with his professional endeavors, as he continues to strive for excellence in all aspects of canine training and development. Jarod’s expertise is reinforced by several certifications from leading canine training authorities: NADOI Certified 4: Recognized by the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors (NADOI), Jarod’s certification signifies his extensive experience and proficiency in obedience training. Major General Steven W Smith (Ret)

Major General Steven Smith, United States Army retired, is a senior level business executive with 40 years of experience in a wide range of enterprises in both the private and military sectors, including cyber defense risk mitigation, strategic planning, complex project management, product development, network operations- telecommunications, and financial management. He has an excellent reputation for building strong teams and work culture that promotes creative, opportunistic and flexible thinking along with rapid delivery of technology solutions. General Smith has had an influential career spanning business and government assignments and encompassing increasingly authoritative positions. His final assignment was as senior military advisor to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army, Manpower & Reserve Affairs, where he counseled the assistant secretary on all training, readiness, and mobilization issues for the Army. General Smith came to that position after serving as commanding general of the US Army Central Command, 335th Theater Signal Command/Army Central Command (USARCENT) CIO. In that role, he led 2,800 soldiers and civilians deployed across the Middle East, and successfully integrated all theater-wide Army strategic command, control, communications, and computer (C4) systems connectivity. MG Smith served the United States for over thirty nine years on active duty, in the Army National Guard, and in the Army Reserves. He has also served in numerous industry executive positions including as a senior director of Global Clients Services to the Information Technology Group at Convergys Corporation; as a senior management consultant at Barclay’s Bank International; as a senior vice president and chief technology officer at Fleet Mortgage Group and most recently as Executive Vice President – Chief Operating Officer for the Loch Harbour Group. General Smith earned his BS in education from The Citadel, graduating as a distinguished military student. He earned his MS in strategic studies from United States Army War College and his MPA from Western Kentucky University. General Smith holds TS security clearance.
